Road Closure - Bridge Street & Church Street
Tuesday 3rd January – Sunday 26th February 2012
Chris Clipson – Chair of Operational Management Sub-committee
Dorset County Council has confirmed that, following an application by Lyme Regis Town Council, parts of Bridge Street and Church Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from Tuesday 3rd January to Sunday 26th February 2012 to allow for essential construction works to be undertaken to The Guildhall and The Hub. The roads will be closed between the junctions with Coombe Street and Monmouth Street, although it should be possible to maintain access to the properties within the closure. A map of the affected area is available on the town councils website: www.lymeregistowncouncil.gov.uk
The works to both buildings will commence on the 3rd January with those to the bay window of The Guildhall expected to take no more than 3 weeks. The works to The Hub are more extensive and are expected to take the full 8 weeks. Every effort will be made to complete the works and so reopen the road as soon as is possible although, as with any external works, best progress will be dependent on favourable weather conditions.
Applications for road closures in Lyme Regis are not made or granted lightly. The impact on the town is recognised by both councils and by the Lyme Regis Development Trust. There is not a good time to close such a major route but there are certainly worse times and by doing these works now we would not look to apply for, and would certainly not expect to be granted, any further closures on this road until the winter of 2012/13 and only then if absolutely necessary.
Marcus Dixon – Lyme Regis Development Trust
The Hub is a very rare opportunity to create a well resourced home for the town's young people when they are not at School. The building is the centre of a major refurbishment, which includes putting disabled access into the building and re-roofing, which has been made possible through grant funding from many people and organisations in Lyme Regis, The Jubilee People's Millions, GF Eyre Trust, The Woodroffe School, The Youth Service and most especially Lyme Regis Town Council.
After a few delays, work on installing the new roof will commence on the 3rd January and will initially run concurrently with that being undertaken on The Guildhall. The application to close Church Street for eight weeks was judged necessary given the size of the re-roofing, the material handling issues and the time of year when bad weather can impact on this type of work. But every effort will be made to complete the job and open the road earlier within the time allotted. I'd like to thank everyone for their forbearance and enabling us to establish The Hub as something the people of the town can be justly proud.
