Public meeting for Mary Anning statue

ANYONE who is interested in finding our more about plans for a Mary Anning statue in Lyme Regis is invited to a public meeting.

The meeting will be held on Thursday 11 October at 7pm in the Guildhall.

Lyme Regis Town Council has given its support to the project in principle, which is being led by Cllr Cheryl Reynolds, chairman of the Tourism, Community and Publicity Committee.

Cllr Reynolds is working with Dorset businesswoman Anya Pearson and her 10-year-old daughter Evie to progress plans for a statue of the renowned palaeontologist.

The project is also supported by Lyme Regis Museum, broadcaster and naturalist David Attenborough, and author Tracy Chevalier.

The meeting will give the public the chance to find out more about the project, hear about the progress made so far, and provide the opportunity to get involved.

Cllr Reynolds said: "A statue of Mary Anning is long overdue and it is fitting that there should be one in her hometown of Lyme Regis, where she made all her significant fossil discoveries.

"The idea of a statue has been suggested many times before but it has never progressed.

"I feel there's a real desire this time to bring this project to fruition, and I hope many people will attend the public meeting to get behind the project and hopefully get involved."

Following the public meeting, a committee will be set up to take the project forward and a Crowdfunding page will be set up to help fund the statue.
