The Regeneration of the Marine Parade Shelters
Latest News 29.05.08 Town Council launches Planning Application At its Special Meeting on 28th May, devoted to the Shelters project, the Town Council agreed the recommendation of its Shelters Working Group to appoint Heighway Field Associates as its Architect / Lead Consultant / Contract Administrator to take the previously-agreed design through the next stage of development and on to construction. The Council also appointed Sands Consultants Ltd as Structural Engineer and Taylor Lewis Ltd as Quantity Surveyor / Cost Consultant for the same period. The Council then authorised this team to embark on the first step in the process, which is to work up the design to the detail needed and submit it formally to West Dorset District Council as a full planning application, including all the necessary pre-submission consultations. All being well, by the end of July the town’s plans for redevelopment of the Shelters should be with West Dorset District Council and undergoing the scrutiny of their planning and conservation officers.

Recruiting the Architect
Since the questionnaire responses have been compiled the search for an architect to design a future for the Marine Parade Shelters; has begun.... A brief for the architects was created and an advertisement appropriately placed to inititate a response from various architects. A copy of the documents available for the responding architects can be viewed here: There were 8 expressions of interest from architects from all over the country, from London to Exeter. These 8 expressions of interest were whittled down to 3 and interviews were conducted with Heighway Field Associates of Exeter, MJW Architects of Somerset and finally Wharmby Kozdon Architects of London. Consideration of these three architects is still ongoing. The Shelters Regeneration Questionnaires are collated Some months ago a questionnaire was released in order to collate the suggestions and ideas from locals and visitors alike as to how the Marine Parade Shelters should be regenerated to complement the newly completed Langmoor and Lister Gardens stabilisation work.
The public were asked for a graded response to ideas put forward on the questionnaire. For instance: How important is a viewing area above the shelters? HIGH MEDIUM LOW NO
Other ideas included: * What functions could the shelters have? * What should the architecture look like? * What features of the shelters, if any, should be conserved? A separate section was also created for the public to respond individually and to suggest their own ideas. AND NOW..... After many hours of work deciphering the responses to the Shelters Questionnaire by members of the Shelters Regeneration Group the results are now available! A report has been created to compile all the ideas raised.

"140 yards of sea-front shelter in a rather sad state, slightly crumbly and really out of date. What to do? Transform them. Bring them up to the standard of the new gardens behind and the beach in front, so they can lead Lyme through the next few decades. Tackling this task is the Shelters Regeneration Group, comprising members drawn from the Town Council, the Development Trust and the Lyme Regis Society. Their brief is to discover what people would like their sea-front shelters to contain, and to set that against what may be feasible technically, financially and practically. The Group started their enquiries at the LymeForward Consultation Day on 22 July where some 60 people filled in the questionnaire to express their preferences, their ideas, their visions. Now the Group wants to hear from a much wider public – the whole town. So here’s your chance to contribute to Lyme’s future by filling in the questionnaire in this Newsletter. There’s space to say whatever you want. They’re your shelters!" by Steve Wilkins |
