Stay safe by the sea

Image of Coastguard rescuing casualties, wading in a metre of water back to safety

As we head into the winter months, Lyme Regis Town Council, the RNLI and the Lyme Regis Coastguard Rescue Team are reminding residents and visitors of the dangers of being cut off by the tide, particularly during rough weather and stormy conditions.

Recently, the Lyme Regis RNLI volunteer crew launched their Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Spirit of Loch Fyne following reports of four people cut off by the tide east of the town.

The crew arrived on scene within minutes and quickly located the casualties with the help of the Lyme Regis Coastguard Rescue Team. Due to strong winds and rough seas, a rescue by lifeboat was not possible. Instead, the decision was made to escort the casualties one by one through the rising water back to the safety of the eastern sea wall.

RNLI volunteer Tom Crabbe, who went ashore to assist, said "This was another great example of how we work closely with our local Coastguard team. From the lifeboat we were able to spot the casualties in a location which may not have been visible from the sea wall. We needed to get them off the beach quickly as the tide was still rising. As it was, they needed to wade through over a metre of water."

All four casualties were brought safely ashore before the lifeboat returned to harbour, where it was washed down and refuelled, ready for its next call. This was the 28th launch for the Lyme Regis crew this year.

A local safety warning

A spokesperson for the RNLI water safety team stressed the importance of preparation:

"There are numerous places, both to the east and west of Lyme Regis, where it is possible to become cut off by the tide. Rough weather increases the risk. If you are considering a walk, please plan your route carefully and make sure you understand the tide times and the weather forecast. Never be tempted to climb any rockfalls or mud slips as these are unstable and very dangerous."

Safety tips to remember

  • Always check the tide times before setting out
  • Plan your route and stick to safe, accessible paths
  • Keep an eye on the weather forecast, especially in winter months
  • Carry a fully charged mobile phone
  • In an emergency, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard

The town council joins the RNLI in thanking all the volunteer crews and Coastguard officers for their dedication and teamwork in keeping our shores safe.
