The events which led to the end of the First World War will be re-told by a military expert in a talk in Lyme Regis.
Chris Copson, curator of The Keep Military Museum in Dorchester will look back at 1918, the last year of the Great War, at the event on Thursday 25 October at 3.30pm in the Guildhall.
Chris will speak about Kaiserschlacht, the 1918 Spring Offensive, and the resulting Hundred Days Offensive by the Allies at Amiens, which eventually led to Armistice.
Kaiserschlacht was a series of German attacks along the Western Front, beginning on 21 March 1918, which marked the deepest advances made by either side since 1914.
The Hundred Days Offensive began with the Battle of Amiens on the Western Front, when the Allies pushed central powers back after their gains from the Spring Offensive.
The story is told with reference to the soldiers of the Devonshire and Dorset Regiments, their achievements, and the strange coincidence of the Dorset’s 6th Battalion ending the war in the Foret de Mormal, a short distance from where the 1st battalion had fired their first shots in 1914.
The talk is being organised by Lyme Regis Town Council and is part of the programme of events being held in Lyme Regis this year to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.
