Cobb stabilisation information drop-in event

A landmark under threat

Stabilising the Cobb: What are the options?

📆 Thursday 27 November

📍Jubilee Pavilion, Marine Parade

⏰ 12pm - 6pm

Details about the future of the Cobb and emergency works to protect the historic structure will be available at a drop-in event in Lyme Regis, tomorrow.

More information about the Cobb stabilisation scheme will be available, helping to explain why the structure requires stabilisation and the complexities and key players involved in taking the scheme forward.

The drop-in event, organised by Dorset Coast Forum on behalf of Dorset Council, will be an opportunity for the public to share their thoughts and ideas on the options, to suggest other improvements, share any concerns about the Cobb and learn about the project.

Did you know? The Cobb was originally built entirely from timber, before being rebuilt in stone during the 14th century. Over the centuries it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times by fierce storms, including major breaches in 1377, 1824 and 1974. The great storm of 1824 was particularly devastating, waves washed away parts of the town, boats were smashed, and several lives were lost.

If nothing is done, it is estimated the Cobb's function as a breakwater would end in the 2040s, potentially resulting in the loss of the harbour, and more than 100 properties would be at increased risk of flooding and coastal erosion.

At the event there will be illustrations of proposed technical options and the community is encouraged to take the opportunity to look at the designs and provide feedback.
