From workshop to water: Boat Building Academy students to celebrate 40 weeks of hard work

On Wednesday 24 June, students from the Boat Building Academy in Lyme Regis will mark the completion of their intensive 40-week course by launching their beautifully handcrafted boats into the harbour.

The launch is always well attended by an enthusiastic crowd of friends, family and local residents.

The dedication, skill, and teamwork demonstrated by the students throughout their course is evident in every detail of the boats, each representing months of hands-on learning, craftsmanship, and commitment. The launch day is not to be missed and is always a special occasion.

This cohort have been building their boats since September 2025 and are ready to see their hard work come to life as their completed builds take to the water for the very first time.

Watch as the boats leave the workshop and make their way down to the harbour for launch.

Boats launching:

16' Ebihen glued-clinker cutter sailing boat

18' traditional clinker-built Grimsby workboat

17' strip-planked Gartside #221 outboard runabout

Also on display:

16' composite foam-core and glued-clinker dinghy

Decibel - a beautifully restored 18' 6" carvel cruising sloop

Everyone is welcome to come along and celebrate this exciting milestone with the Boat Building Academy students.
