Key repairs strengthen Lyme Regis’s historic Cobb

Repair works to a vulnerable section of Lyme Regis’s iconic Cobb have now been completed by Dorset Council.

The works will help to protect this much‑loved landmark and the harbour it shelters.

The Cobb plays an important role in supporting local fishing, businesses and tourism, as well as helping reduce the risk of coastal flooding for the town.

Last month, during a low spring tide, work was able to take place to repair a void on the base of the Cobb wall.

Fixing it required very precise timing, with engineers working during a short window of low spring tides and calm weather.

Previous attempts had been delayed by poor weather and a significant build-up of shingle in the area.

When the void was first identified in 2025, temporary measures were put in place to ensure the Cobb was protected before permanent repairs could get underway.

Then in June, the permanent repairs were able to take place during a two-day window.

Engineers first prepared the site and installed a specialist concrete mattress bag, filling it with concrete to structurally secure the base of the wall.

They then returned the next day to remove equipment and complete the final sealing works.

This newly installed mattress has now stabilised the area and is providing essential structural support to this previously vulnerable section of the Cobb.

The area will continue to be monitored as part of ongoing maintenance, and the repair is expected to gradually blend in with its surroundings over the coming weeks.

Dorset Council would like to thank residents, businesses and visitors for their patience while this essential work has been taking place.
