A NEW flagpole stands proudly at Lyme's parish church thanks to funding from Lyme Regis Town Council.
St Michael's Parish Church was awarded a large capital grant of just over £4,600 to replace its rusted and unsafe flagpole.
The mayor of Lyme Regis Cllr Philip Evans and town clerk John Wright attended the official unveiling of the flagpole, together with members of the church and the Rotary Club of Lyme Regis, which also made a donation to the project.
The aim was to have the flagpole installed by Remembrance Sunday, as the church played host to the service on that day.
Church treasurer Michael Sheldon said: "The flag provides a strategic focal point, of which there is no other tall flagpole in town. It is essential for national celebrations, such as Remembrance Day, coronations and other national events.
"Every town of Lyme's size should have a tall flagpole as a beacon of community commitment.
"The flagpole will be seen all over town and will beckon individuals or groups to visit the church."
