TEAMS of local residents, organisations and businesses are invited to take part in the inaugural Sporting Lyme Volleyball Tournament.
Lyme’s sandy beach will be the setting for the competition on Saturday 25 July, when teams of five will compete for the tournament trophy.
The event is one of the feature activities of Sporting Lyme, a summer-long festival of sport organised by Lyme Regis Town Council and supported by organisations in-and-around Lyme Regis.
The festival aims to encourage people to get involved, try new sports, improve health and wellbeing, and promote the many sporting groups in the area.
Teams of all ages, abilities and experience are encouraged to enter a team into the volleyball tournament, with a gift voucher for Milly’s Ice Cream up for grabs for each of the members of the winning team.
There will be two nets set up on the sand, with two leagues playing on each net, so every team in each league will play each other.
The winners of each league will then play each other in the grand final.
Local residents, businesses, organisations, sports clubs and schools are encouraged to enter a team into what promises to be an afternoon of friendly rivalry and community spirit.
The mayor of Lyme Regis Cllr Philip Evans, who is spearheading Sporting Lyme, said: “Beach volleyball is one of those sports that anyone can enjoy, regardless of experience and age. Whether they’re playing to win or taking part for a bit of fun, it’s a great way to bring the community together.
“This is one of the many Sporting Lyme events taking place between May and September, with the aim of bringing people together, encouraging participation and showcasing the unique sporting opportunities Lyme and the surrounding area has to offer.
“We’d love to see as many people from the local community, as well as visitors, represented on the sand. Even if you’re not taking part, come along and support the teams and enjoy the atmosphere. May the best team win!”
